The 2025 Golden Globes nominations have arrived to set the stage for a highly competitive (yet no less glitzy) awards season ahead.
Across the usual film and TV categories, the Golden Globes nominations are primed to anoint the rise of major contenders in the Oscars race, from potential nominees made up of late-breaking box office hits like Wicked (perfect Globes material as a star-studded musical epic) to prestige dramas in the vein of Anora, Conclave, and The Brutalist.
Amid its box office domination, Wicked earned multiple nominations, including for Best Motion Picture — Musical or Comedy as well as for Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo's performances, while Selena Gomez, Zoe Saldaña, and trailblazing trans performer Karla Sofía Gascón all received individual nods for Emilia Pérez, director Jacques Audiard's awards season titan that also earned 10 nods, including notices for Best Motion Picture — Musical or Comedy, Best Director, Best Original Score, and two Best Original Song nominations, among others.
Breakout body-horror hit The Substance also received a huge boost on the awards trail from the Golden Globes nominations, earning a surprise nod for Margaret Qualley's supporting performance in addition to nods for Demi Moore's leading work, Coralie Fargeat's direction and screenplay, and for Best Motion Picture — Musical or Comedy.
Huge TV stars also showed up among the Globes roster of nominees, from Shōgun and The Bear to Hacks, Abbott Elementary, and Only Murders in the Building's casts. Gomez is a double nominee for both film and TV projects this year, as she also scored an acting nomination for her role in Only Murders in the Building.

On the limited side, Baby Reindeer and Monsters scored major nods, as did Colin Farrell's work in the DC Comics series The Penguin.
This year's nominees come on the other side of a particularly difficult period for the Golden Globes organization, which has overhauled its membership, practices, and voting standards in recent years following a racial exclusion scandal that eventually led to the dissolution of the storied Hollywood Foreign Press Association and a new chapter in the Globes' legacy.
As previously announced, EGOT-winning actress Viola Davis will be honored at the Golden Globes ceremony with the prestigious Cecil B. DeMille Award for her career accomplishments, which includes a past Golden Globe win for her role in Fences and six additional nods across her film and TV projects.
On the TV side, Ted Danson is set to receive the Carol Burnett Award for career-spanning excellence on television. A 13-time Golden Globe nominee, Danson previously won the award for TV movie Something About Amelia and twice for his work on Cheers.

The Globes' upcoming ceremony will be hosted by comedian Nikki Glaser, taking the reins one year after fellow stand-up comicJo Koy courted criticismfor his performance as emcee of the awards show's 2024 edition.
